Did you happen to catch the opening weekend of the 2016 Setouchi Triennale? Of course I didn’t miss it. Talk about perfect weather to kick off the 3rd triennial international art festival in Kagawa.
I didn’t have a chance to make it to the islands, but I went to Takamatsu Port to check out the art installations in the area. After that, I went to the Sakaide City Ohashi Memorial Library to meet with the library director about their art exhibition running from April 1 – May 31. It’s an exhibition featuring local artists to promote the 2016 Setouchi International Art Festival. They offered to put “my little Kagawa” on display along with some photos from the book, so I was extremely happy.
While I was there, I also got a tour of the library! They have some great programs to inspire children to read, as well as an international room with children’s books from all over the world. I also saw the library’s zoo! Well, it’s not a real zoo, but an art installation by the Sakaide artist, Tomio Okayama, called “The Strange Zoo.” It’s definitely unique and fun for children and adults.
Another impressive thing I saw was the astronomical observatory and giant telescope at the library. You can check out the solar system every month in their astronomy club. Please check this link for more details.
So if you have free time, I highly recommend a visit to the Sakaide City Ohashi Memorial Library. There so much you can do including see photos from “my little Kagawa.” In the future, you might even be able to catch an A-Go! Kids Rock concert there. I suggested that my English school, Step by Step ~ English for Life, could collaborate with the library on future projects to promote English education in Kagawa.
